Boost Employee Tech Adoption with Perceived Usefulness

In case you missed this on my LinkedIn…

If you want employees to adopt new workplace technology, get your comms to focus on it’s…

Perceived usefulness (PU)

Psychology research suggests that if a user believes a new app or device will help them with their everyday life, they’ll have a greater intention to use the tech. And user intention is thought to be a key driver of actual use. Bingo!

Here are some ways you can help boost employee PU levels:

👩‍🏫 Have internal influencers publicly endorse using the new tech – line managers and popular colleagues are good places to start
😇 Play to colleagues’ egos as appropriate – let them know how using the tech will make them look good internally
🏋‍♀️ Build trust in the new tech – share examples of how it can reliably help colleagues complete vital work tasks and deliver high quality outputs.

The influence of PU on new tech use is pretty robust – it’s been found with smartphones, MS Teams, wearable healthcare devices and various AI-powered apps and tools (eg chatbots). It’s also been found across industries and countries.

As someone who does a lot of digital change/transformation comms, I’m fascinated by how and why we accept certain technology and reject others.

Which piece of tech have you accepted/rejected recently and why?
